VLC 1.0.0 Released!


    VLC, the popular, cross-platform video player, finally reached version 1.0.0 today, under the codename 'Goldeneye'. VLC (VideoLan Client) is built using the Qt4 toolkit (used wxWidgets in the past) and comes with any feature one would require from a video player, including support for various formats, including MKV, DVDs, DVD ISO images and mounted images.

    According to the announcement on the official website, the features of VLC 1.0.0 include:
    - free, open-source and cross-platform
    - live recording
    - frame-by-frame support
    - finer speed controls
    - HD codecs like AES3, Dolby Digital Plus, TrueHD, Real Video 3.0 and 4.0 etc
    - major improvements in many formats and several new formats
    - new Dirac encoder and MP3 fixed-point encoder
    - video scaling in fullscreen mode

    The source tarball can be downloaded from here. I'll soon post a tutorial regarding installation in Ubuntu and a review.

    Update: Here's the tutorial for installing on Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty.
