Car Engine Does Not Crank Over - Auto Repair Tips

Car Engine Does Not Crank Over - Auto Repair Tips
    By Dennis Bandy

I remember years ago a customer of mine called because she was stranded at McDonalds. Her car wouldn't start, it wouldn't even crank over. Luckily I was only about five minutes away and was able to drop by to check her car for her. The battery terminals were after-market, the type that has two 7/16" bolts that clamp over the bare cable end. These are a quick easy repair for the battery cable but sometimes they do loosen over time. That was exactly what had happened in this case. I was able to just tighten the terminals where they clamped to the bare cable ends and she was on her way.

A car that doesn't turn over at all, usually has a battery related problem. Many cars are towed to auto repair shops every year due to loose or corroded battery terminals. If the car engine doesn't crank over at all, the first thing to check is the battery and terminal connections. Here's a quick auto repair tip, turn the lights on and try the horn. If the battery is any good at all this will be a quick preliminary check. If there's no horn and no lights, try wiggling the battery connections. I leave the lights on while trying this so I can tell if I'm making a better connection when moving the battery terminals.

Still no luck? A load test with a battery tester is the next step after checking the connections at the battery. Many times a battery will show signs of failure by turning the engine over slowly when it's beginning to fail, this is an early warning to have the battery tested. Unfortunately other times batteries will just fail with no prior warning. Temperature changes can sometimes reveal a problem with a battery that otherwise may go unnoticed. An increase or decrease of temperature will typically send cars in droves to the repair shop or parts stores with sluggishly starting cars. Batteries will need to have a good charge before they can be properly tested. Modern battery testers will indicate if the battery has a sufficient charge to be checked.

Alternators that are not charging properly can cause a car to have similar symptoms. It's always a good idea to check the alternator to make sure the output is within the manufacturer's specifications. The parts store or auto repair shops have the test equipment to check the alternator output for you. They will check the amperage, volts, diode pattern and check to see if the alternator has a draw or short that may be excessively draining the battery.

Starters can draw excessive amps or have an open circuit completely. After checking to make sure a good battery is installed, check the big cable connection at the starter which is the 12v one that comes directly from the battery. Then check at the starter solenoid (the small wire) to see if it is getting power when the ignition is turned to the start position. If power is going to the starter solenoid but the starter is not engaging, more than likely the starter has an open circuit or is binding. Sometimes the starter can be tapped with a hammer while the ignition is in the start position to get the car to start. This is basically to get the car into the shop for starter replacement. I've used this trick many times over the years to keep from having to push the car into my service bay. The starter can also be tested to see if it is creating too much of a draw on the battery. This can happen when the starter begins to to drag or bind and puts too much of a toll on the battery. The amp draw is measured with a battery and electrical system tester to see if it is excessive.

My tips and tricks have been picked up over the years with real hands on experience. Many auto techs don't like to share their techniques, but I've been selling tools since 2005 and it's time to share what I've learned during my time as a Master Automotive Technician. I hope my article helps many people to figure out what's going on with their car and just maybe help prevent them from being stranded.

2001 Pontiac Grand Am Stalling - Answer

I have had an issue with a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am Stalling when it idles down like at traffic lights. It would start right back up, but as soon as I let off the gas, it would go dead. I asked my Mechanic and he gave me the answer I was looking for--cheap and easy to fix! So if your 2001 or similar body style 4 cylinder Grand Am is Stalling at traffic lights, check this first!

In the front of the engine there is a small Vacuum hose, remember I am no Mechanic. It is rubber and is behind a few small plugs, but directly in the front of the engine. The Vacuum hose gets dry rotted and allows air to escape and makes the gas mix too rich, this will also affect your fuel mileage. The best way to check is to start your car, push on the hose and see if your car tries to stall--BEING CAREFUL OF MOVING PARTS AND FANS! If you are like me and not a Mechanic, don't get too cute. But, to make a long story short, I paid $2.00 for the hose and hooked it up myself, so you know it wasn't too hard. Problem fixed so hope this helps someone else save some money--if you have problems finding this hose, leave me a comment and I will try to elaborate or take a picture.Source URL: http://ashesgarrett.blogspot.com/2009/01/

Songbird 1.0 Review - An Awesome Release!

Not long ago I reviewed Songbird 0.7.0, and in the meantime version 1.0.0 was released. What are the new features Songbird comes with and what improvements over the previous releases features 1.0? Well, to begin with, I was extremely impressed in a pleasant way with this Songbird release, so let me tell you why.

Songbird is an audio player and music collection manager built using XUL, the same language used by Firefox. Songbird is available on all the three major platforms: Linux, Mac and Windows.

To start with, I must say I was very impressed to see how many improvements and how much work was put into this player in the last couple of months only, since my last review of version 0.7.0.

When Songbird starts, it will prompt you with the license agreement, and then it will let you choose your media directory so it can scan your music collection. Scanning is pretty fast, and it took around 1:30 minutes on a collection of aproximately 5000 Ogg Vorbis and FLAC files, using my Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHz.

Scanning the music collection for the first time

Next, you will be able to choose what plugins you want to enable by default. Songbird comes with an iTunes plugin, Last.fm support and song submission, Shoutcast support, and a plugin which I strongly recommend, mashTape. mashTape is a configurable add-on which will fetch detailed information about the currently playing song from various websites. For example, it will show the artist's biography using the Last.fm wiki, album reviews from Amazon.com, artist news from Google News, photos, and the most wonderful thing, it will even embed YouTube videos related to the artist. It's just great, isn't it? And all these features are possible due to the fact that Songbird is practically not only an audio player, but a web browser too. It embeds most of the Firefox browser into it, so you will be able to search for lyrics or read artist info (other than that provided by mashTape) directly from it just by opening a new tab inside Songbird.

The Preferences window is similar to the one of the Mozilla browser

The interface is clean and intuitive, and the playlist allows you to sort it by any information possible: from title, artist, album or year, up to bands' tour dates, genre or file location. And these are just a few. You will be able to search the playlist using the Ctrl+F shortcut.

I also love the tabbed approach, which lets you open more than one playlist in each tab, and eventually browsing the artist info in another one. Also, this release includes several new keyboard shortcuts to improve Songbird's functionality, and you can see them from the Help -> Keyboard Shortcuts menu. You can install new add-ons directly from Songbird, or from the official add-ons website, in which case you will have to install them manually in ~/.songbird2/RANDOM.default/extensions (they are ZIP archives). There are plenty add-ons to choose from, which allow you to change the appearance, customise the web browser, get further information about your music and even more.

Another thing to mention: Songbird will automatically detect album covers inside the song's directory, and will display in the lower-left corner (I tried it for cover.png and cover.jpg). You will be able to right-click on a cover and save it under a different name if you like.

Songbird in action - notice how useful the mashTape add-on is

The official page provides a package which contains the binaries, so you won't have to compile anything yourself. Just copy the directory Songbird in a location of your choice (I use ~/apps for example), then make a launcher to the songbird binary. The configuration files are kept inside the ~/.songbird2 directory.

One of the few minuses is that Songbird does not start very fast and the interface is a little bit too slow, but this should not be such a big deal. Once in action, Songbird is beautiful!

Regarding stability, for the couple of hours I tested it Songbird never crashed and I could not catch any bug at first sight. It seems pretty solid.

    Conclusion
Well, Songbird definitely became a major player with this release. With plenty of features and a wonderful approach, I can say I warmly recommend Songbird as the primary audio player to anyone, and at least a try if you haven't used it yet. It's powerful and it practically acts like a music centre for an audiophile.

Tick and untick the add-ons you want Songbird to use - I strongly recommend Last.fm and mashTape

3 Popular Tips for Konqueror 3.5.9

KDE 3.5.x comes with Konqueror as the default file manager and it is still used in distributions like Debian (the upcoming Lenny release) or older Kubuntu releases, like the LTS 8.04 version. In this article I will show three tips (which I consider popular) for tweaking or working with this older version of Konqueror.

Create an Open as Root menu option
In order to open a directory as root with Konqueror, all you have to do is to create a text file with the .desktop extension with the following content:

    [Desktop Entry]
    ServiceTypes=inode/directory
    Actions=open_as_root

    [Desktop Action open_as_root]
    Name=Open Directory as Root
    Icon=konqueror
    Exec=kdesu konqueror %F

Save the file under any name you like with the .desktop extension, say open_as_root.desktop and put it in the ~/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus directory, where ~ is your home directory.

Now each time you right click a directory, the option Actions -> Open as Root will be available, and after you will enter the root password you will be able to open it with super user privileges. The screenshot below shows how this should look like:

    Use profiles
Since Konqueror is not only a web browser or file manager, but also an image and document viewer (not to mention the ability to embed kaffeine-part and the amarok sidebar), it's normal to use it with profiles, so you can open a different instance of Konqueror for each task separately. This can be easily done by using profiles. For example, to create a profile for file management which will open three tabs in three different directories, you can do the following: first open Konqueror and the tabs you want to be automatically opened (also notice that you can configure previews, icon size or sorting methods - they will also be saved); next go to Settings -> Configure View Profiles... and enter a name for your new profile (FM in this example); now hit Save. You can open Konqueror using this profile with the following command (in Konsole or the Run dialogue - ALT+F2):

    konqueror --profile "FM"

Also, see this article to know how to create a launcher for it.

    Create web shortcuts
Although on Linux the most popular browser is Firefox, Konqueror still is a pretty good alternative (well, 3.5.9 has some trouble submitting certain forms). One of the features which comes with Konqueror by default are web shortcuts. Web shortcuts can be used to search for a specific term using a specific search engine. The default ones are very numerous, including Google or Wikipedia.

To add a new web shortcut, just go to Settings -> Configure Konqueror... -> Web Shortcuts.

    Hit New and fill in the necessary fields. For example, for a search on Uncyclopedia, you would go to http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page, then search on it any term, like FOOBAR. Then copy the address name (which is http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/FOOBAR) into the Search URI field in Konqueror, and replace FOOBAR with \{@}

Finally, give a name to the shortcut, say unc. You can now search on Uncyclopedia just by typing unc:search_term in Konqueror's address bar.Source URL: http://ashesgarrett.blogspot.com/2009/01/

Top 10 Applications to Install After Installing Ubuntu

Amarok - in my opinion, this is the greatest music player and collection management for the Linux platform. I think it's also a killer application for Linux with all the features it has.

SMPlayer - one of the most powerful video players for Linux using the mplayer engine, and including support for DVDs, DVD ISO images, Matroska video files and much, much more. A must-have.

KTorrent - for me this is the BitTorrent client of choice. It has all the features I need, including the possibility to only download certain files in torrents, a feature which some other clients lack.

XChat - I think there is no other (graphical) client for IRC as powerful as XChat. Maybe KVirc, but regarding the scripting/plugins part, XChat wins over Konversation or KSirc easily. It supports scripting in Perl and Python by default, C plugins, and a Tcl scripting plugin is also available, but not by default. It can also be easily customisable via the /set variables.

BasKet - BasKet is a notes-taking application which I also reviewed in the past; it has a wonderful approach of letting you make full projects, not only simple notes, and it organises your data in baskets and sub-baskets. Except for the fact that the current version does not support printing (well, you can always export notes to an HTML file and print that one) it is definitely full-featured. I strongly recommend this application over other notes-taking applications.

Wesnoth - this is a turn-based strategy game, well-maintained, with a strong community and a beautiful gameplay, both in single-player mode and online. I must say, I love this game and I really appreciate all the work it has been put for creating and maintaining it.

K3b - definitely the most full-featured CD/DVD burning application, and it allows to create ISO images too. No KDE 4 port yet though, and it looks like development is currently stalled.

Emacs - I find Emacs to be an essential tool and one of the most powerful and popular IDEs out there.

Yakuake - a terminal application which acts just like consoles in FPS games (e.g. Quake, ET, UT). Yakuake can be hidden or shown using the F12 keyboard shortcut.

TVTime - this application is useful to those who own a TV card. In the past I also tried kdetv, but nothing compares with TVTime in my opinion.Source URL: http://ashesgarrett.blogspot.com/2009/01/

Opera 10 Alpha - Preview

    Introduction
Opera 10 is the next generation of the popular, closed-source web browser built in Qt, and available on UNIX (including both Linux and FreeBSD), Mac and Windows platforms.

In this review I used the Qt 4 version of Opera 10 alpha, build 4102 (the .tar.gz package), but Opera 10 will be available using both Qt 3 and Qt 4 toolkits, so you can choose which one you prefer. I ran Opera in Debian Lenny (KDE 3.5.10) with all the updates to date.

    Presto 2.2 engine
Opera 10 alpha is powered by the Presto 2.2 rendering engine, which, according to the website, should provide 'significant improvements in speed, performance and security'. Presto 2.2 also comes with improved CSS performance, web font support, and a score of 100/100 at the Acid3 test, where Firefox 3.0.5 gets 71/100 and Konqueror fails. Acid3 is a test page for web browsers which shows how much a browser follows web standards like DOM or JavaScript.

    Impressions
At this stage, the interface is Nice Graphics by Flott Altså, the same one used in Opera 9.6, with apparently no changes. Currently, the alpha version does not come with Flash Player included by default. A bug I could catch was that sometimes when you click a widget (like the web pages scrolling bar or clicking on tabs) does not always work the first time you use it, so you will have to click it again. This happens completely random for me.

Regarding stability, I was impressed to see that Opera 10 is pretty stable, even though it's still in alpha stage. No crashes occured while I used it for this review.

Currently Opera 10 does not include new features (except for the Presto engine), but these will be added pretty soon when it gets into beta phase.

    Conclusion
There isn't much to say about Opera 10 alpha at this time, expect for the major change with the new version of the rendering engine. I truly hope for a stable release on Linux rather than lots of new features, since I already consider Opera full-featured, coming with an IRC client, BitTorrent client, widgets, great-looking, customisable themes, these being just a few.Source URL: http://ashesgarrett.blogspot.com/2009/01/

    Starting Nmap 4.62 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2009-01-19 23:45 EET
    Interesting ports on localhost (127.0.0.1):
    Not shown: 1711 closed ports
    PORT STATE SERVICE
    25/tcp open smtp
    80/tcp open http
    111/tcp open rpcbind
    113/tcp open auth

Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 0.066 seconds

To close a port, you can use the following command as root:

    fuser -k 80/tcp

Which will close port 80 (used by the web server).Source URL: http://ashesgarrett.blogspot.com/2009/01/

Toyota Camry Review and History

Toyota Camry is one of the best selling sedans in the US market. Lets take a look at what Toyota has done to push Camry to the top.

The brief history of Toyota Camry has to be the first discussion. To see where Camry has been and what made it evolve into what it is today. Toyota has never really payed too much attention to US cars, but has been in direct competition with the Honda Accord.

Toyota Camry came out in 1983 trying to give some choices for those who did not follow the slogan "Buy American." When Camry first hit the scene it was not the ugliest duck, but was a close runner up. But, there is something to be said about the first Camry, I still get 80's model Camry's traded today! A 25 year old Car? That is unheard of for a car to last that long.

In 1987 Camry came out with an upgrade that followed the Accord update in 1986. The largest improvement in 1987 was the decrease in noise and vibration and a smoother riding sedan. Also, a nicer looking car compared to its earlier model.

In 1988 Camry offered a V6 Engine for those that said the sedan was too sluggish. Another big decision in 1988 was Toyota placing a production plant in Georgetown Kentucky. This proved to be a huge boost because Americans could buy a Japanese car and support American workers.

1992-1996 Toyota took the Camry to the top with larger displacement engines, bigger cars, better looking cars, safer cars, the whole 9 yards.

From 1997-2001 Camry offered more levels and better designs. In 1997 Americans voted the Camry #1 for the year so Toyota was doing something right. The Camry always had a change to rival the Accord or at least stay in competition with the Accord.

Toyota 2002-2006 made some aerodynamic improvements and did not try to confuse customers with too many options. Toyota saw the focus heading toward a safer more fuel efficient car and headed in that direction. Later in this model change a few things were added. A larger displacement V6 that was more fuel efficient, some luxury upgrades like navigation, but nothing too confusing. I believe American car makers can learn from Toyota about too many options. There are too many ways to equip an American car and it seems you never have the exact match, where if you could say you have a choice between A and B it would be much easier and simplified.

A total redesign for 2007 to current with four models: base CE, popular LE, sporty SE and luxurious XLE. There was a definite design for styling that makes it sleeker and sexier.

2009 Toyota Camry now offers the Camry model which is the base; dropping the CE, Starting price at $19145. The LE model starting price at $20,600. The SE starting at $21,815. The Luxury Camry XLE starting at $25,575. Toyota also offers a Camry Hybrid starting at $26,150. All models have a fuel mileage of 21 city and 31mpg highway except for the hybrid that offers 33/34.

2009 Camry Engines: 2.4 liter DOHC 4 cylinder with 158 horsepower, 3.5 liter DOHC 6 cylinder with 268 horsepower, and a 2.4 liter hybrid engine with 147 horsepower.

2009 Camry Color Choices: Classic Silver Metallic, Black, Barcelona Red Metallic, Blue Ribbon Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Super White, Sky Blue Pearl, Aloe Green Metallic, Desert Sand Mica. Interior choices are ash fabric, Bisque Fabric, Dark Charcoal Fabric, Ash Leather, Bisque Leather, Dark Charcoal leather. Not all choices are available for all models.

There are a host of other options available including but not limited to Navigation, heated seats, push button start, Hybrid system energy flow, Heated Seats, Sport Fabric, 6 Disc changer with Blue tooth, just to name a few. Many are available only in a package and cannot be separated. This makes the ordering and build process easier and keeps customer choices to a minimum.

2009 Mazda6 Test Drive

When the Mazda6 first hit the scene back in 2003, it was nimble and playful, and the power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering was exemplary. In fact, it was favorably compared to the BMW 3 Series—an impressive feat for any vehicle, let alone a mid-sizer in this price range.

But it was too small and, some say, underpowered to truly compete in the tough mid-size sedan segment against the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. That’s a big reason why Mazda says sales in the U.S. have been somewhat underwhelming—well below the 100,000-vehicle per year sales mark they were hoping for.

The all-new 2009 model was designed to change that. It’s bigger, it comes in three trim levels, and it’s still got our favorite quality: The Mazda6 is a hoot to drive, unlike its less sporty foes in the marketplace. —Barry Winfield

    The Specs

Unique to the North American market, the redesigned mid-size sedan now comes in at 72.4 in. wide by 193.7 in. long (6.9 in. longer than its predecessor), with a robust 109.8-in wheelbase (4.5 in. longer). These increases might seem small, but they translate into quite a bit more cabin space. According to Hiroshi Kajiyama, Mazda’s chief program engineer for the 6, these new dimensions give the car more leg, shoulder and hip room (plus more luggage space) than the Accord, Altima or Malibu. Better still, he says that the car has put on no more than 200 pounds in the process.

To handle the new size and weight, Mazda upped the power of both the base four-cylinder engine and the top-of-the-line V6. With 170 hp and 167 lb.-ft. of torque, the slightly larger 2.5-liter inline-4 no longer is plenty powerful. Along with its bump in displacement from 2.3 liters, the four-cylinder features a new two-stage intake, more efficient cylinder heads and a less restrictive exhaust manifold.

When connected to the standard six-speed manual, the four-cylinder delivers 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. The automatic option adds an extra mile per gallon in the city and on the highway.

The Ford-designed, Mazda-built V-6—featuring 3.7-liters, 272 horses and 269 ft.-lb. of torque—is the same engine found in the much larger CX-9 crossover. But it offers less attractive fuel numbers (17 mpg city/25 mpg highway), and the six-speed automatic is the only available transmission for the V-6.

Mazda zeroed in on noise and vibration reductions, and the cabin area is 30-percent more rigid than in the previous car, according to Mazda’s R&D director Kelvin Hiraishi, who pointed out bulges in the floor pan intended specifically to stiffen that panel—and prevent it from acting like a noise-generating diaphragm. Engineers also focused on cutting down the wind noise leaking through door seals and sunroof surrounds.

There are a bunch of chassis improvements, including a one-piece, forged-steel front lower-control arm to provide better lateral stiffness and to eliminate any compliance in steering over bumps. The front wheels now turn almost 5 degrees more than before, reducing the turning circle by over 3 ft.

Each trailing arm in the rear suspension has an attachment point raised 1 in. to increase the anti-dive effect, keeping the body flat during hard braking. Larger diameter bushings allow a little rearward movement on harder bumps to improve impact absorption, and the twin-tube KYB dampers are placed further outboard in a more vertical position for better wheel control.

Michelin Pilot four-season radial tires are standard issue on all Mazda6 models, and come sized to fit either 16- or 17-in. wheels on the “i” model, with 17 or 18-inchers on the “s.” In terms of safety, the ‘09 Mazda6 is replete with airbags, ABS, LATCH child-seat hookups and stability control as standard equipment. There’s also an optional blind-spot monitoring system that checks the lanes alongside the car and warns of the presence of vehicles if you try to change lanes.

Other interesting gadgets include keyless entry and a 10-speaker, 333-watt Bose stereo. An owner can utilize the vehicle diagnostics connector (via a special tool at the dealer) to tune various functions such as headlamp on-and-off cycles, turn-signal buzzer volume, blind-spot warning activation, power door lock operation and about 20 other functions.

    The Drive

Whether or not the redesign has the desired effect on consumers remains to be seen, but we like the look of the new Mazda6 on the road. The interior is artful and tidily crafted—basically what we’ve come to expect from this inventive car company. And there’s certainly ample room inside, even for this 6-ft.-5, long-torso reviewer to sit in the back so long as he scrunches down a tiny bit to avoid contact with the headliner (the headroom is slightly compromised by the fast roofline). Luckily, there’s enough knee room to allow that. And the sound dampening measures really worked; this car is as quiet as a church mouse.

Of course, with its “zoom zoom” reputation at stake, the new Mazda6 has to handle nimbly, and the firm bushing durometer values used in its suspension transmit a little ride noise back into the cabin—well, at least in the Mazda6i model powered by that new 2.5-liter, 170-hp engine.

We certainly expected more power—and got it. Where the 2.5-liter four feels pretty peppy out on the road, the 272-hp V-6 is downright intoxicating. Coupled only to a six-speed automatic with manual shift mode, the 6i models demonstrated great flexibility with a serious high-end punch.
