Report Card for Cars, What Grade Will Your Car Get?

    New Fuel Economy Sticker for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles
    The EPA and DOT are working together to create a new fuel economy sticker to be placed on new cars. They have proposed two different labels, which while different, are both designed to let the buyer know just what kind of car they are buying.

    The first label gives a letter grade to the car, based on its fuel economy. Electric cars would get A+ ratings, while no van would get over a C+. Plug-in hybrid vehicles would fall in the A- range.

    The second label focuses in on the miles per gallon and the estimated fuel costs. This allows for greater comparison between vehicles, especially given the big differences that are happening with new cars.

    Both label have MPG and GPM (gallons per 100 miles) ratings along with greenhouse gas emissions. They will also give an estimate of annual fuel costs, plus more information comparing the fuel economy of this car to that of other like vehicles. Smart phone owners will be able to scan in the QRR code and get additional information.
    Electric Vehicles Get an A+

    The exciting part for those who are following the new types of cars (electric, plug-in hybrid, E-REV, etc...) is the new labeling system. Vehicles like the Volt are supposed to drive for 40 miles or so on all electric power, then go hybrid. After that initial electric range, you need gas to go, so the fuel efficiency figure is important to know.

    That type of information will now be found on the sticker. The new sticker is designed to let you know the estimated fuel economy in each different mode (electric, hybrid, or gas-only).

    The only problem I have with the new sticker is its emphasis on 'energy consumption measurement' where the energy consumption (in this case, electricity) is in MPGe, or Miles Per Gallon equivalent. That sort of measurement is confusing to people. The KiloWatt hours is shown on the electric vehicles, but not on the plug-in hybrid vehicles. New Standard for Measuring Hybrids and Plug-ins Fuel Economy

    The trouble with measuring fuel efficiency of a vehicle that doesn't necessarily use gas is a tough one. Just look at the ridiculous numbers floating around for the Volt (230 mpg) and the Nissan Leaf (an electric vehicle!). I mean, really, what does an MPG rating for an electric vehicle mean to anyone?

    You quickly get the idea that some sort of standard needs to be worked out. And not the same one that works for gas-only vehicles.

    Plug-ins or Electric Range Extended Vehicles (E-REV), in particular, are tough. If you can drive 40 miles on all electric, then switch over to gas powered, you probably aren't interested in knowing your mpg as we know it. If you drive less than 40 miles a day, you may not need to worry about your 'fuel economy', but you may be very interested to know how much electricity your using. Or, if you do go over the 40 mile range, the traditional mpg rating could be very important, since you want to know how much gas you're using.  Then throw in the whole city vs highway driving.

    And just to complicate matters, you want to be able to compare the E-REV to the plug-in to the hybrid to the gas-only vehicle when you go out to buy one (otherwise what's on the sticker the dealer has to put there becomes worthless).

    In order to combat the problem, a standard is needed and the SAE International says they have one.

    The SAE International has released a new standard to measure the exhaust emissions and fuel economy of hybrids and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and all their variants. The new standard is J1711 - Recommended Practice for Measuring the Exhaust Emissions and Fuel Economy of Hybrid Electric Vehicles, including Plug-in Hybrid.

    It can be applied to any Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV). An HEV is defined as a road vehicle that can draw propulsion energy from both of the following sources of stored energy: 1) a consumable fuel and 2) a rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) that is recharged by an electric motor-generator system, an off-vehicle electric energy source, or both.

Why Not Start and Stop?

    A Mazda executive is blaming the EPA's testing for the lack of stop-start technology spreading here in the US. Despite it's popularity overseas and the ability to save 7% in fuel for a very small price tag, the start-stop technology has not made a significant dent in the market. (Source: AutoNews).

    According to the Mazda exec, Robert Davis, the EPA testing which creates the figures shown on the MPG sticker will show very little change in the car's fuel economy.

    And so, car makers are very reluctant to put the start-stop into cars when the EPA is going to say it doesn't really do anything. Customers just aren't going to believe dealers when they say, "No, really, this does something" when the sticker doesn't show it.

    In case you're wondering, start-stop technology turns the engine off when the car is stopped or decelerating. It then restarts the engine when you step on the gas pedal. It's found in full and mild hybrids, but hasn't made a dent in more conventional cars.

    The EPA testing includes only one complete vehicle stop, which results in a 0.1 or 0.2 mpg improvement according to Davis. Customers aren't going to want to spend $500 more for a technology that's just going to give them back so little. But Davis points out in real world driving, you could see a 7-9% increase in fuel economy.

    The article points out that Mercedes, Audi, Mazda, Volkswagen and others all offer start-stop technology elsewhere. And if the EPA changes its rule development, we could see it here in the US.

The Top 10 in Gas Mileage

    The top 10 list of vehicles with the best gas mileage are dominated by hybrids and diesel engines.  To increase your gas mileage, the best cars for getting the best gas mileage tend to be smaller, but not necessarily so.  Hybrid or diesel engines tend to offset the need to decrease weight, just look at the Ford Escape Hybrid, which shows up ninth on the list.

    Diesel fuel has its drawbacks, of course, but so do hybrids. Mostly the issues these days come down to cost, given the nature of 'clean' diesels. Ford Pushes Toyota Prius Out of the Top Spot

    An 'ultra efficient' Ford Fiesta ECOnetic has pushed the Toyota Prius out of the top spot in fuel efficiency ratings in Australia according to the GoAutoNews (via FreeP).


    At 63 mpg combined, the Ford Fiesta beats out the 60 mpg for the Prius in the Australia rating system. For comparison purposes, the Prius is rated at 50 mpg in the US. The Ford Fiesta ECOnetic is a diesel. Ford has no plans on introducing the sub-brand or to sell the Fiesta ECOnetic in the States, for now.

    The Fiesta uses a 1.6-liter turbodiesel with low resistance tires and uses low-viscosity oil.  The ECOnetic TDCi engine produces 66 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque.

    Other efficiency focused changes include:
    • A specially-calibrated Duratorq TDCi common rail diesel engine
    • Longer final drive gear ratio
    • Addition of a green shift indicator light in the instrument cluster, which signals the optimal point to change gear to maximize fuel economy
    • Improved aerodynamics – lowered ride height, air deflectors, unique wheel covers
    • Weight reduction by removing the spare for a tire mobility kit

    SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – October 16, 2009: Ford Australia today set a new fuel efficiency benchmark for the auto industry in this country by introducing Australia's most fuel efficient car – the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic.

    With a combined fuel consumption rating of just 3.7 litres per 100 kilometres1, the fuel efficiency of Fiesta ECOnetic surpasses all other vehicles currently on sale in Australia, including petrol/electric hybrid models.

    It also produces fewer CO2 emissions than any other conventional, internal combustion engine vehicle, with an official CO2 emission rating of 98 grams per kilometre – making it only the second vehicle in Australia to achieve CO2 emissions under 100g/km and the only non-hybrid vehicle to attain such an ultra-low CO2 standard.

    Fiesta ECOnetic will officially go on sale on December 1 with a recommended offer price of $24,990 driveaway, offering consumers one of the most affordable and fuel efficient vehicle packages ever presented for sale in Australia.

    "Fiesta ECOnetic perfectly balances a stylish, affordable car that considers the environment and our future, without compromising the style or technology which has made the Fiesta one of Australia and the world’s most popular small cars," Mr Burela said.

    "It brings together a whole range of clever thinking and technologies that are available right now, creating a 'greener' vehicle that delivers economy without compromise and genuine savings against the fuel cost of daily driving."

    Fiesta ECOnetic looks and functions just like a conventional Fiesta, using conventional diesel powertrain technology, yet it delivers industry-leading fuel efficiency, as well as best-in-class CO2 emissions.

    Using a combination of the latest generation common rail diesel powertrain, together with a carefully selected list of features specifically engineered to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, Fiesta ECOnetic achieves a combined fuel consumption rating of 3.7 L/100km1.

    The detailed urban/extra urban results for Fiesta ECOnetic are also class- and industry-leading achievements, with urban cycle fuel consumption of 4.6 L/100km and an extra urban (highway) cycle figure of just 3.2 L/100km1 – the latter being 13.5 per cent more efficient than the leading hybrid model.

    This efficiency is matched by impressive driving quality and performance, with the 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi engine producing maximum power of 66 kW at 4000 rpm and peak torque of 200 Nm at a very accessible 1750 rpm.

Honda Offers $500 to Previous Hybrid Owners

    Honda is offering a $500 rebate to 2003-2007 hybrid Civic owners as the result of a lawsuit against it. A Honda Civic Hybrid owner from California was upset he was not achieving the mpg numbers 'promised' him and brought a lawsuit against Honda.

    At the time, I thought it was a ridiculous lawsuit, given Honda doesn't make the claims. Cars are rated by the EPA.

    But as part of a settlement (Source: Reuters), Honda will now offer $500 in rebates or $100 in cash for previous Civic Hybrid owners if they are willing to buy a new hybrid from Honda.

    MPGs are determined by the driving conditions, the tire pressure, the road conditions, the oil changes, whether you have the windows open or closed, turn the air conditioner on, what you have in the trunk, what speed you are driving, if it's windy out, etc... For someone to bring a suit against a car company because they advertised, legally, the fuel economy numbers as set by the EPA... I don't know what to think.

    The EPA adjusted the fuel economy numbers of all cars a short time ago, when they realized their testing was setting too high a standard for all cars. Hybrids mpg numbers fell more than other cars, but then, they had farther to fall than most cars. Hypermilers were achieving higher than the ratings then, and they're still doing it now.

    I can't agree with the writers conclusions more (see the Reuters article I linked to above). Plug-in hybrid car makers had better start being careful about the numbers they throw out. The 230 mpg claimed by GM for the Volt is ridiculous on the face of it and dangerous in the short and long term. Turn Your Car Into a Golf Ball to Increase Your Fuel Efficiency

    It works, it really works!

    Growing up, I always wondered why golf balls were dimpled and I was surprised to learn the answer. It's not obvious, but the dimples help the ball travel farther and longer by creating chaos in the wind stream, which cuts down on the tail (watch the video for a great visual explanation). And then I wondered why we didn't see it more often, say on cars?

    I always assumed the dimple effect only took place at higher speeds. Either that or it was just plain ugly.

    Turns out Mythbusters thought the same thing (via Autoblog). They took a Ford Taurus and covered it with dimpled modelers clay.


    They took some model clay, placed it in the back seat (to make the weight the same) and saw they could get 26 mpg at 65 mph. Then they put the 1,082 dimples onto the car. Testing showed they went up to 29 mpg at 65 mph.

The 2010 Fuel Economy Guide is Here

    The 2010 Fuel Economy Guide is out.  Get it hot off the presses.  Or you could just peruse the most fuel efficient vehicles for 2010.

    WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy today unveiled the 2010 Fuel Economy Guide, which gives consumers important information about estimated fuel costs and mileage standards for model year 2010 vehicles.

    “Every year, consumers use the Fuel Economy Guide to find clean, efficient, cost-effective vehicles that meets their needs and their budgets,” said EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson.  “It's an easy, accessible resource for everyone, and helps us cut harmful pollution from the air, and save money for American drivers.”

    “Fuel economy is about both saving energy and saving money,” said Energy Secretary Steven Chu. “Buying fuel efficient vehicles - like the many hybrid technologies featured in this year’s Fuel Economy Guide – helps limit carbon pollution, lessen our dependence on foreign oil, and reduce driving costs for American families.”

    Fuel-efficient models come in all types and sizes, so consumers can save thousands of dollars over a vehicle’s lifetime without sacrificing performance. Model year 2010 fuel economy leaders include a wide range of hybrid models, from compact cars to sport-utility vehicles.

    Each vehicle listing in the Fuel Economy Guide provides an estimated annual fuel cost. The estimate is calculated based on the vehicle’s miles per gallon (mpg) rating and national estimates for annual mileage and fuel prices. The online version of the guide allows consumers to input their local gasoline prices and typical driving habits to receive a personalized fuel cost estimate.

    Fuel efficiency is important for reducing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that contribute to global climate change. One of the most important things consumers can do to reduce their contribution to climate change is to buy a vehicle with better fuel economy.

    The Fuel Economy Guide continues to be available to mobile users (fueleconomy.gov/m), and is readily accessible from a mobile device, smart phone, or personal digital assistant (or PDA).

Is This Misleading or What?

    It's stories and quotes like this that prove the point that some have been making about switching from mpg to gallons per mile (gpm). 

    Consumer Reports
    The Honda Insight hybrid showed the largest drop in fuel economy—over 15 mpg going from 55 to 75 mph
    ...
    Vehicles with lower fuel efficiency had the smallest drop. The V8-powered Mercury Mountaineer has a fuel economy of 23.8 mpg at 55 mph and that drops to 21.2 mpg at 65 and 17.8 at 75 mph..
    That is just so misleading.  In gallons per mile, the Insight drops from 1.93 gallons per 100 miles to 2.74 gpm.  That's a difference of 0.81 gpm.  The Mountaineer drops from 4.20 gpm to 5.62 gpm, a difference of 1.42 gpm.

    So not only are starting off at twice the inefficiency, you end up losing almost twice as much.

The 133 Most Fuel Efficient Cars for 2010

    Once again, it's time to list the most fuel efficient cars, trucks (if there were any), SUVs, station wagons, sedans, hatchbacks, coupes, etc...  In the past, I've created lists for the most fuel efficient cars for 20092008, 2007, 2006, and 2005. As with those previous lists, I rank the vehicles based on their combined miles per gallon (45% highway and 55% city).

    Not surprisingly, the top four spots are taken by hybrids, but diesel engines are filling quite a bit of the top rankings.  Oil burners have better gas mileage (mpg), but oil burners are expensive to buy, just like hybrids.  Also, diesel still costs more to purchase (for now).

    Smaller cars tend to rank higher, as do stick shifts.  Note that types of engines (4-cylinder vs. 6-cylinder or stick vs. manual) makes a big difference in fuel economy.  The list of vehicles shows the make, model and engine type.  So keep that in mind when you see the Golf or Jetta for what seems like the tenth time.

    The list of top gas mileage vehicles is longer this year, with 133 models qualifying.  To qualify for my list, you need to get over 25 mpg.  If you notice a model missing from the list of most fuel efficient vehicles, please let me know in the comments.  I'll make the fix ASAP.
